Becoming Anchored S3E6: Examining Your Relationship with Alcohol with Amanda White

Updated on

In this episode of Becoming Anchored, licensed therapists and hosts Lauren Jackson and Laura Deneen sit down with Amanda White, licensed therapist and founder of Therapy for Women Center. Amanda is also the author of Not Drinking Tonight, which largely inspired our conversation.

Amanda wrote Not Drinking Tonight after noticing anyone can have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol without necessarily being an alcoholic, coining the term “disordered drinking.” Amanda hopes to create a safe space for people to re-evaluate their drinking without shame and fear, encouraging more honest conversations and self-assessments.

Key Takeaways from This Episode:

  1. Curiosity and Self-Reflection: We encourage listeners to explore their relationship with alcohol with compassion and curiosity. This involves honestly examining the reasons for drinking, what needs it fulfills, and identifying areas where it may not be as beneficial. Instead of relying on alcohol, Amanda suggests that listeners get curious about how alcohol serves them and consider healthier coping strategies.
  2. Shifting to Healthier Coping Skills:  Amanda highlights approaching the relationship with alcohol with self-compassion as essential. Rather than imposing strict rules, the goal is to create a gradual, sustainable shift in habits. Setting boundaries, taking breaks, and asking for help may also improve resilience and reduce stress.
  3. Compassionate Exploration in Therapy: Amanda discusses how she approaches clients' relationships with alcohol with empathy, acknowledging the role it plays in their lives without judgment. Amanda implements a harm-reduction approach, which prioritizes building self-awareness, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and boundary-setting skills.

This episode is filled with mindfulness and coping skills, like intentionally pausing before drinking or beginning with a mocktail before having a glass of wine if still desired. Join us as we foster healthier relationships with alcohol and learn how to set boundaries for better emotional health.
